Finished Size:
Suggested yarn and hook will make approx. 36" x 38.5" afghan

 

Materials:
Main Color (A), Baby Fingering yarn, varigated or ombre
Contrast Color (B), Baby Fingering yarn, solid color
Crochet hook, size D or E (which one is it?)

 

Motifs:
For each strip needed, make 25 Full Squares and 2 Half Squares in Main Color.

Full Square
Chain 5, join to form ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 6, in ring (3 dc, ch 3) 3 times, 2 dc; join in 3rd chain.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, *(2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc)* in corner, dc in next 3 dc, repeat from * 3 times, repeat * to * once, dc in next 2 dc; join; finish off.

Half Square:
Chain 5, join to form ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 6, 3 dc in ring, ch 3, 3 dc in ring, ch 6, 3 sc in ring, sl st in each of the next 3 chains.
Rnd 2: Ch 4 (counts as FIRST dc, ch 1), 2 dc in corner, dc in next 3 dc, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in corner, dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in corner, ch 4 (counts as LAST dc, ch 1), sl st in same sp to join; finish off.

To Join Motifs:
Begin and end each strip with a Half Square. Attach a length of matching yarn to the back loop of the LAST dc. With right sides facing, join this corner of the Half Square to the center stitch in the corner of a Full Square (Fig. 1).

Working in back (wrong side) loops only, whip stitch squares together in a zig zag pattern.

Ripple Pattern:
With D hook, chain 5.
Row 1: (*dc next 8, sk corner st, dc next 8*,3dc in ch 3 sp) across, repeat * to * once, 2 dc in last ch sp; ch 5, turn.
Row 2: Dc same st, (*dc next 8, sk next 2, dc next 8*, 3 dc same st) across, repeat from * to * once, 2dc in last ch sp; ch 5, turn.

Repeat Row 2 to desired length (per chart). Finish off. Attach next strip with a whip stitch in back loops of motifs (similar to joining motifs). Continue in this manner to desired length.

Finishing:
Sc evenly across the long edge. Finish off.
